Thanksgiving

This coming monday is Thanksgiving Day in Canada. So I thought I would make a drawing to celebrate this holiday. It's time to start counting your blessings.

Together

When I saw this weeks topic, together  for Illustration Friday I immediately thought of this illustration that I did for Leola Kennedy's book There's a Reason . It is a lovely children's novel about a girl struggling with the limitations caused by her hearing impairment. Through various situations she comes to learn that she has value and that God has a plan for her life. This story takes place in northwestern Canada during WW2.
Leola asked me to do some little illustrations for her book. I found it to be a more difficult job than I anticipated but Leola was very patient and gave me a lot of encouragement.
Through working on this project I came to realize that illustrating children's books is something I would really like to pursue as a career.

Lush

I went off on a different direction than I had started with this drawing. When I thought of Lush (the Illustration Friday topic) tropical plants were the first thing that came to mind. I I thought it would be cool to do a bunch of different tropical Hawaiian plants and maybe a butterfly.

I remembered that my grandparents had gone to Hawaii and that my grandpa had taken a lot of photos of flowers and plants when they were there. And all of the photos are in my basement. (Somehow most if my grandparents photo albums ended up in my possession).

Grandpa used to take a lot of photographs before he went blind. He made a whole album dedicated to flowers and another one of all birds. I think there is even one of frost on window panes.

Well the tropical plants were a little too confusing and difficult for me but a photograph of a Canadian tiger swallowtail butterfly on a lilac bush caught my eye. Grandpa actually took quite a few pictures if these beautiful butterflies. So I dedicate this illustration to the memory of my grandfather who had a great appreciation for beauty.

Hybrid

The topic for this weeks illustration Friday is Hybrid so I thought I would combine two of my favourite animals. I'm sure a Panda Cat would make a good pet.

Holiday

I've just finished this drawing. I wanted this drawing to have a feeling of adventure and fun. I just came back from a vacation and I think this drawing captures how I feel about getting away for a while for some relaxation. I had a great time visiting my sister and her family.

So far all of the drawings I have posted on this blog have been done using Serif Draw Plus. I have only recently started drawing digitally. I've never tried Photoshop or Illustrator so I'm not sure how it compares but for what I've been doing Draw Plus has been good.

Children

For this weeks Illustration Friday topic I planned to draw a scene of children building a sandcastle. I only got as far as finishing one figure. I will post the completed scene on my blog when I finish it. I spent a lot of time working on the hands, feet, and legs of this boy to get him looking right. My figures usually look like they are doing the silly walk. I'll have to buy one of those little wooded art figures and a copy of Gray's Anatomy for Artists.

Sweet

The topic for Illustration Friday is sweet. What could be sweeter than freshly baked monster cookies?

Tension

Here is another IF entry. I was originally going to do a more complicated scene of two women arguing on a bus but ran out of time. I seem to be doing a lot of different styles. Hopefully with practice I will find my own style.

Tuesday 14 May 2013

This is my first IF entry. The topic for this week is future. I decided to draw a portrait of Kiera Cameron, a charcter from the t.v. series Continuum. Kiera played by actress Rachel Nichols is a police officer sent from the future to the present time.
