Inktober Day Fourteen

Oops, I missed a few days. Thanksgiving holiday totally derailed me from my Inktober drawings. Anyway, todays prompt is tree, so I did a quick and very inaccurate sketch of the snow falling on the tree outside my window.

Todays Inktober prompt is Lost. Yay, I've made it though a whole week.

Inktober Day Six

The prompt for day six is hidden. This creature is supposed to be a jaguar.

Inktober Day Five

Todays Inktober prompt was Sad. I took inspiration from my cat. She is a cat of many emotions and lately has been feeling sad because the weather has turned cold.

Inktober Day Four

Todays prompt for Inktober is Hungry. I decided to draw a little superhero eating his breakfast.
I bought some Pigma brush pens to try out for this challenge. They are fun to use but I haven't learned how to control them very well yet. Hopefully my inking skills will improve as I do more of these.

Inktober Day Three

The prompt for day three is collect.
The worst thing about ukuleles is that they are so collectible.

Inktober Day Two

The prompt for day two was noisy so I drew a couple of noisy birds. I think I need some more practice drawing birds. The bird at the top looks rather fish-like to me.
It usually takes me a long time to come up with a design that I like. Limiting myself to an hour to come up with a drawing is rather challenging. So be prepared for a lot of truly horrible drawings to come.

Inktober Day One

This is my first time doing Inktober. I'm going to follow Mr Jake Parkers prompt list. Todays prompt is fast.

Rosie and Mr. Bluey

So I've spent the last few days planning out my story. I have divided the story into twelve scenes that will happen over thirty two pages. This is the opening scene that I call home.

The first two pages are a double page full bleed spread that serves to introduce the two main characters and their relationship. The story is about Rosie and Mr. Bluey, dog and owner. And Mr. Bluey takes care of Rosie.

The next two pages are showing that going for a walk is Rosie's idea, Mr. Bluey would probably prefer to stay in his chair but Rosie wins out.

Personal Project

I've given myself four months to create a wordless picture book.

I will make some printed copies of the book as well as put it in PDF that I will display on my blog. I will post a couple of updates each month as the project progresses.

The book is called Rosie and Mr. Bluey go for a  Walk . It is about a happy little dog named Rosie and her owner Mr. Bluey.

To Rosie, life is an exciting adventure, full of fun. Mr. Bluey on the other hand just wishes life would be a bit more uneventful. Why can't he just have a nice, quiet walk without all of the obstacles and interruptions that always cross his path?

Facial Expressions

I joined the gesture drawing group again. We did some facial expression sketches. These are drawn from screen shots of an Indiana Jones movie (I'm not sure which one).
Bobby P did a great job of setting up and hosting  the drawing group again. Thanks Bobby.

Practice Sketches

These are some quick practice sketches I did with a gesture drawing group. I could do these same type of gesture drawings by myself, and I do sometimes but it's just more fun doing it with other artists who are there to improve their skills.

Kid Characters Running

Here is another rough sketch of my kid characters. This time of them running. It was fun trying to figure out how each of them would run. I think I'll bring this sketch into photoshop and paint and refine these characters.

Kid Character Sketches

Here are a few simple sketches of kid characters. I'm trying to get a variety of shapes and personalities.

Adjustment Layers

I gave myself the challenge to do a painting of a night time scene. I chose to paint a moon bear sleeping under the moon.
I had planned to finish this painting in a week but now I'm well into week three and I am ready to start this painting over again!
I had a really hard time trying to get the right colors and values. I finally decided the try adjustment layers in Photoshop Elements to solve these problems and I'm pretty happy with the results.
I thought that it was important to use desaturated  colors in a night scene but I ended up with a painting that just looked like it had a white film over it. I used two adjustment layers. One for the color (which made the most dramatic changes) and another for the contrast and brightness.
The end result really gave me a much better value range but some of the colors look a bit strange and harsh so I decided that I should just use what I've learned as a guide and repaint the painting. I need to make a few compositional changes anyway.
I'm curious to know how others use adjustment layers in their digital painting . So let me know if you find adjustment layers to be a helpful tool and at what point in the process do you use them?
